Mr. ONEderful: Oliver’s 1st Birthday Party

Oliver's 1st Birthday Party

How is my sweet baby boy one? This year went by so fast! We had the best weekend celebrating Oliver's 1st birthday party with our family & best friends. I loved having everyone surrounding him that have been with him all year long. He is so loved! We are very blessed to have a village around our kids. With Oliver's first birthday being the day after Christmas, we decided to keep his theme centered around Christmas - at least for this first year. We also went with hosting his 1st birthday party the weekend prior to Christmas so we could take in his first birthday together as a family.

I am very blessed to have a creative & giving step mother in law who takes a theme & brings it to life. I truly just have the house clean & food ready. She does everything else. She is a major DIYer, so you can't buy everything you see because she creates it. But if you're looking to plan your babies 1st birthday party I wanted to share what I could here. Our theme: It's the most ONEdeful time of the year.

With the years moving forward I'm sure Oliver will want a more specific party theme to whatever he's into at that time. So for his 1st birthday party we made it easier on ourselves by making the theme centered around what our house is currently filled with: Christmas! We did focus on making sure his day was birthday themed, but overall it all flowed so well.

I make a homemade cake for all of my kids birthdays. First all three of their 1st birthday parties I've made this exact smash cake. The recipe is easy & the cake is actually really good!

Smash Cake Recipe:
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 cup milk

Mix all the ingredients together. Bake in a 9x13 pan at 350 F for 15-20 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely & then cut out small circles with cookie cutters. I made 3 small circles in a larger size and was able to make 3 mini circles that I froze to use on his actual birthday. For the frosting:

Frosting recipe:
  • 1 1/2cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter room temperature
  • 1tsp vanilla I like to use clear vanilla
  • 1 1/2-2tbsp milk

Mix everything together. Once the cake is cooled place a small amount of frosting on the bottom of the cake pan you're going to display it on. Place the first circle on top (helps hold it in place). I simply spread frosting on the top allowing some to come out the edges. The place the second circle & repeat. For the top, warm up the rest of the frosting & slowly pour on top to get that drip effect. It really doesn't need to look perfect in my opinion. Then top with lots of sprinkles. I use Watkins Dye Free sprinkles. Keep in the fridge & remove about an hour before serving.
