Sioux Falls, SD: A Hidden Gem

If you would have asked me 10 years ago about South Dakota, I would have given you a very different opinion than I have today. I never in my life would have imagined I'd be traveling to the rolling hills of SD multiple times a year and I definitely would have never thought I would be saying how much I love this beautiful state. Some of you may not know, but my sweet husband Kirby was born and raised in a small town about an hour outside of Sioux Falls. Mitchell, South Dakota, home of the Corn Palace, is a town of about 15K people and has truly sucked me right in. What's the Corn Palace you ask? Well, it's a large event center off Main Street covered in ears of corn and just so happens to be the world's only Corn Palace. I know it sounds crazy, but it's actually really cool. When I started dating Kirby and went home to meet his family for the first time, it was quite the eye opener.

I’m a city girl, always have been, and coming into a small town in the middle of South Dakota was never something I thought would have an impact on me. I had never shot a gun or cleaned a fish after catching it hours earlier (I actually called it "skinning" the very first time haha). I had never seen a palace made of corn or gone to small little bars full of people dressed in camouflage on a Friday night. I had never tried pheasant or chislic (nor did I ever think I wanted to) and I had never in my life thought I would date (let alone marry) a guy who grew up off a dirt road.

Funny how life throws you the best curve balls sometimes. But the biggest thing of all that I had never experienced was the amazing friendships between everyone. Seeing people who had grown up together their entire lives and acting more like family than friends has been the biggest blessing to not only see, but to be able to say I'm a part of now. I am forever thankful to be in this group of people and forever in love with Mitchell.

Sioux Falls is definitely a hidden gem in South Dakota. It's also much bigger than Mitchell and I'm so happy I finally got to check it out a bit. It truly is such a hidden gem filled with adorable shops, restaurants and even a cute little pastry shop with the cutest macaroons! What more could you ask for?

I think my favorite thing is the charm and character kept throughout the streets. Sioux Falls started booming when the railroads hit in the late 1800's and they did such a good job of keeping that vibe. The restaurant we ate at for lunch was actually located in an old railway area, which was so cool to me. I'm a huge fan of that of style and was really surprised to see it kept so well. I was also really surprised at how many fun boutiques lined Phillips Ave (kind of like their Main Street)! I had so much fun walking in and chatting with some of the girls at each store and even snagged a cute sweater for myself (obviously). That's one of the things I love most about South Dakota, everyone is seriously so nice and always willing to help.

Find a list below of all the places I was able to check out in just a few short hours and please make sure to add Sioux Falls to your bucket list. The sunsets are beautiful, the people are so loving and the character will not disappoint.

Shops

Chelsea's Boutique - These babes were so sweet and had the best scented store ever. The best part... They're also a shoe boutique and had so many adorable pairs to choose from. I bought a super soft mauve sweater... Keep an eye out on IG 😉

Lot 20 29 - They have the coolest boutique filled with clothes, shoes and adorable goodies you could browse for hours.

Oh My Word - This luxury paperie has my heart... I seriously could have bought basically everything in this store. They had the cutest planners, calendars, notebooks... You name it! They also make personalized things and have so many options on customization.

Keller's Green Grocery - This place was so cool! It's built on the first floor of an old building and the decor was amazing.

Restaurant & Pastry Shop

Sanaa - This place was so surprising! It has the most delicious (gluten free) Mediterranean food and I was seriously blown away. Each dish was super unique and had the most amazing flavor. Highly Recommend!

CH Patisserie - Anyplace that has macaroons obviously is a win for me, but this place goes above and beyond. Pastry Chef Chris Hanmer is a world champion as one of America's youngest chef to ever win it! If that doesn't make you step inside, I don't know what will.
